  • What is happening to the music scene in Wales? We take a look.

A scene that once supported bands like Manic Street Preachers Upward, The Stereophonics and Super Furry Animals, the live scene in Wales since then has continued to show signs of stress over the past years, with the most popular reports including allegations of Womanby Street allegedly closing. Firstly, lets mention the locations around Cardiff, instead of centralising focus to the capital. Le Pub in Newport closed its doors recently, a seminal venues for bands to play, with past shows including Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes and 80′s band and Newport natives, The Darling Buds. Whereas, moving north, you’ve got The Tabernacle, an old chapel owned by a former manager of the label Creation Records, Alan McGee.

  • TORPIDO EP - Lastigband

With the lyrics effortlessly making their way into the song, singing as if no effort was involved with a voice similar to Jim Reid’s unwavering coolness whilst fronting 80′s shoegaze band, The Jesus and Mary Chain. Gethin Davies’s voice swaying in and out, haunting “Arnofio” occasionally being completely drowned out by the band’s various instrumental inputs. Complimenting the voice of Gethin Davies is an inclusion of guitar, sounding almost skewed, as if members of Lastigband have only found out about the use of a whammy bar and are using it to full effect throughout the song.

  • Libertino Records at The Parrot.

Friday 23rd June, The Tates celebrate the release of their single, “Electric Girl” at The Parrot, Carmarthen. Especially, within those first 40 minutes at least, you’re lolling around waiting for the band, silently hoping that nobody will try and talk to you. You could see it in some people though, but the Parrot always seems to have a warm atmosphere to it, this tightly compact venue that throws you amidst a shoal of gig goers, there’s not much room to move.

  • Welsh Punk debut single by Los Blancos, “It’s Hard To Wake One”

Albeit this, “It’s Hard To Wake One” quickly transcends into distorted vocals led by Gwyn Rossers, the voice for Los Blancos. Continuing on from the “Clarach” demos, Los Blancos have since adopted an unrivalled confidence that will see the band propelled forward by their attitude and ability to layer sound.

  • Llythyr Agored i Alan McGee a’r Tabernacl

Really, dyma le ni’n mynd yn anghywir yn Cymru. Er waethaf y posibilrwydd cyffrous o fandiau newydd ar y cynnywdd trwy’r sin gerddoriaeth Gymraeg. Mae’r Tabernacle byth di cael gydnabyddiaeth haeddiannol a digwyddod fod y lle wedi syrthio yn llwyr o ddan y radar efo bob allfeydd gerddoriaeth yng Nghymru. Ar ol fod yn lleoliad cyngerdd sefydledig, a saif y capel trosi ar ben dop dref Talgarth, ger y Gelli Gandryll.

  • An open letter to Alan McGee and The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle never got the deserved recognition and fell completely under the radar to all Welsh music outlets. As a young music fan living in Wales, there is a noted lack of venues that are able to uphold such a strong series of musical events.
